I'm a nanomaterials scientist, poet, translator and activist originally from Iran. I earned my PhD in nanotechnology at the University of Waterloo in Canada. For me, science and poetry share the same root: IMAGINATION. I started writing poetry since I was a teenager. Since then, poetry was the only thing that could make life more bearable. I think "Poetry is the only antidote for life".
I was involved in lots of poetry groups and programs and have won a few awards such as the Judges Choice Award for the ultra-short poem competition of The Ontario Poetry Society in 2017 and Loh’s short story competition in Iran in 2009. During 2016-2017 I hosted a show about Persian poetry at the Ottawa Persian radio “Namashoom”.
In 2018 I published my first poetry collection in English called the “Climate Change” on Amazon and later in 2019 my collection of poetry in Persian on LuLu. You are able to purchase these books on this website.
I translate poetry and novels from English to Persian. I have translated from authors like Charles Bukowski, John Fante, Raymond Carver and Jose Angel Valente.
In 2019 I started a campaign to ask Amazon Kindle (KDP) to add Persian language to their self-publishing services. I believe this will be a great step to fight censorship in Persian speaking countries.
Mahyar's second poetry book in English is called "Maple syrup on the sorrow of the middle east" and it was published in 2021.
